Moorfields Eye Hospital

Mr Fred Chen

Fred Chen boxed profile picAs a Clinical Research Fellow and PhD student working on the London Project, I am responsible for various aspects of the two clinical trials in autologous RPE choroid transplantation. I will be performing pre- and post-operative investigations including measurement of distance visual acuity, reading ability, contrast sensitivity, and performing fundus-controlled microperimetry, spectral optical coherence tomography, fundus angiographies and fundus autofluorescence imaging. I will also contribute to the interpretation of the data collected at various postoperative visits after surgery. I have been involved in applying for ethics approval for these clinical trials and for obtaining specific surplus tissues during eye operations to enable the scientists to test the effects of substrate and neural retina on functions of pigment epithelial cell lines.

I have practiced ophthalmology for 6 years. Prior to joining the London Project, I have had general ophthalmic training in both United Kingdom and Australia. I also had fellowship training in medical and surgical retina at Cheltenham General Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital. I have a special interest in optical coherence tomography and fundus-controlled microperimetry.

Key achievements

Provided (as a co-author) an extensive up-to-date review of RPE transplantation in the journal: Progress in Retinal and Eye Research.

Member of a team that first demonstrated feasibility and possibility of RPE choroid autograft in restoring visual loss in a patient with inherited macular dystrophy.
